Words Added

Here are some interesting, weird and, sometimes, funny words we have recently added to the MercurySays dictionary. Some words are recent inventions. Some are rare or they have been used in new contexts.

Midwit

An intelligent person who understands little about how the real world works.

Contango

A situation where a current price is lower than the expected future price.

Backwardation

A situation where the current price is higher than the expected future price.

Precrimination

An accusation in response to another accusation which has yet to be made.

Presentism

The idea that everything in history should be judged from the values of current times.

Derpy

Being foolish or stupid.

Hate-watch

Viewing, for example, a television show with the intention of criticizing it.

Voluntold

Being ordered to volunteer to do something. Used by the New York Post in an article about a State Trooper and Andrew Cuomo’s daughter. (Aug. 19, 2022)

Indigent

Poor, impoverished, deficient. Used by Bob Bakish, CEO and President of Paramount Global on Fox Business’s Barron’s Roundtable in reference to buying advertising space. (Aug. 6, 2022)

Pique

To excite or arouse interest.

Usually as “piqued:” To briefly feel unhappy based on wounded pride.

Expurgate

To remove something bad or incorrect.

Dooming

Condemning someone or something to destruction.

Psyops and Psy-ops

Activities designed to manipulate an enemy’s thoughts, emotions, and behaviors.

Copium

An imaginary drug to help people overcome loss.
